When we bought our house almost 20 years ago, there was A LOT of updating needed. From the 2-tone orange painted kitchen cabinets to the 40 + old carpet on the stairs heading to the second floor. We have slowly tackled many projects over the years. Some pretty big like adding a deck across the entire back of the house or more than doubling the size of our kitchen with a summer addition project. Some are much easier and involve changing the feel of a space with something as simple as paint.
Our teenage daughter has a second-floor bedroom with charming plaster coved ceilings and tucked into that room is a closet with slanted ceilings and some pretty dark old wood paneling. She drew up some plans for a closet re-do a few years ago. Some simple new shelves and a request to brighten up the space.
Fast-forward to a Monday morning this summer, we rolled up our sleeves and finally started to tackle this smaller updating project. It really felt that way with two people painting the slanted ceilings in this closet! This Momma really did enjoy the time it took working side by side with my favorite young lady.
We began with taking out the rickety shelving and the old clothing rod, next wiping down the old wood paneled walls. We decided it would be easier to just paint these walls instead of ripping them down, we have found that usually leads to a much larger project! Cover the hardwood floors with some protective paper and we were off.
We used a paint and primer product from Behr and although it did take 3 coats as we were doing a clean white color, it turned out wonderful. From start to finish this took a total of 3 days, with my amazingly talented husband quickly creating some simple shelving.
We have a pretty happy teenager in the house, and it is amazing how transforming a little elbow grease and some paint can do to change a space.
One of these days we will tackle the second-floor bathroom remodel. But first we will enjoy a few lazy summer days.
