For years, we proudly avoided the Elf on the Shelf craze. It seemed like too much work, too much stress, and honestly, a little too “commercial” for our cozy holiday vibe. But then, one particularly challenging year changed everything.

It was the year of COVID, and it also happened to be the same year my Dad received a cancer diagnosis. That combination of uncertainty, stress, and being stuck at home made us realize we needed more joy, more magic, and more reasons to laugh together as a family. That’s when we finally decided to bring a little elf into our lives.

And I’m so glad we did.

The first morning our elf appeared, my kids were wide-eyed and completely enchanted. It didn’t take long for the elf to become more than just a daily hiding spot—he became a reminder to find joy in small moments, to laugh, and to embrace creativity, even during tough times.

We’ve loved seeing our elf “interact” with the kids, from silly poses on the kitchen counter to tiny notes encouraging kindness and gratitude. What started as a simple holiday tradition has turned into a cherished family ritual that makes December feel extra special.

How We Make It Fun (and Easy!)
Over the years, we’ve picked up a few tricks to make Elf on the Shelf even more enjoyable:

  • Keep it simple: You don’t need elaborate setups every day. Sometimes a mischievous note or a small hiding spot is enough.
  • Set a timer: Set that timer on your phone!! Save yourself from franticly trying to move your elf in the AM.
  • Add small accessories: Tiny props like miniature candy canes, mini mugs, or elf-sized toys make everything feel extra magical.
  • Plan ahead: A few minutes at night is all it takes to set up a quick, creative scene.

Where to Find Elf on the Shelf & Accessories
We usually shop for our elf and little props on Amazon—it’s convenient, and you can find everything from basic elves to themed accessories. Here are a few items we love:

These little touches have made the tradition even more special and fun, and the kids look forward to it every year.

Thinking of new Elf on the Shelf adventures each day can get tough, especially during the busy holiday season. So, I’m sharing a collection of our own Elf memories and setups through the years—hopefully they bring you a little joy and inspiration.

Starting Elf on the Shelf that year gave our family something to smile about during a challenging season, and it’s now one of our favorite holiday traditions. If you’ve been hesitant like we were, I promise—it’s worth it.
