Carving Jack-O’-Lanterns has been a yearly tradition in our family, as the kids gets older and busier, sometimes it happens only days before Halloween. I will share some of the fun carved pumpkin designs we have used over the years, maybe you will find a new choice for your carving this year.

I thought it might be fun to dive into how this tradition came to be.

What Is a Jack-o’-Lantern?

A Jack-o’-lantern is a carved pumpkin with a light inside, usually placed outside during Halloween. People carve faces—sometimes scary, sometimes silly—into the pumpkin and place a candle or light inside to make it glow.

Where Did Jack-o’-Lanterns Come From?

The tradition of carving vegetables into lanterns began centuries ago in Ireland. But instead of pumpkins, people used turnips or potatoes! They carved faces into them and placed embers inside to scare away evil spirits.

The Legend of Stingy Jack

The name “Jack-o’-lantern” comes from an old Irish legend about a man named Stingy Jack. According to the tale:

  • Jack tricked the Devil several times.
  • When Jack died, he wasn’t allowed into Heaven or Hell.
  • Instead, the Devil gave him a burning coal to light his way in the darkness.
  • Jack placed the coal in a carved-out turnip and has roamed the Earth ever since.

People began making their own lanterns to scare away “Jack of the Lantern” and other wandering spirits.

When Did Pumpkins Enter the Picture?

When Irish immigrants came to America, they found that pumpkins, native to North America, were much easier to carve than turnips. Pumpkins quickly became the vegetable of choice for Halloween lanterns.

Today, pumpkins are a big part of Halloween decorations, and carving Jack-o’-lanterns is a fun tradition for families everywhere.

Why Do We Carve Jack-o’-Lanterns?

Originally, Jack-o’-lanterns were used to frighten away evil spirits. Now, they’re a symbol of Halloween fun and creativity. Many communities even hold pumpkin carving contests and Jack-o’-lantern festivals!
