Ah, bring on fall! I really don’t want summer to come to an end…. but, there is an excitement about the coming crisp fall mornings laced with school day routines, crockpot dinners and cozy, warm cups of coffee. Let’s get ready for a good transition from lazy summer days to school day schedules.

1. Embrace the Fall Vibe (and All Its Cozy Perks)

  • Crank the flannel, grab that mug with leaves on it, and get ready to enjoy opening those windows to let in the cooler fall breeze. Fall mornings feel calmer (Yes, I thrive on routines) even if your to-do list still looks like it will never end!
  • Seasonal Scents — Gotta love all of those traditional Fall smells, cinnamon, nutmeg, warm caramel, and woodsmoke fill the air.

2. Think Small, Don’t-Try-Too-Hard Routines That Actually Help

  • Evening prep for less stress: Start the school year with simple evening tasks can save everyone’s morning sanity. Easy tasks, like having lunches ready, clothes picked out, and making sure everything in (and out) of those backpacks. In the evening it’s easy to not want to get these things done, but it really can make or break a good morning for all.
  • Stuff drop zones: Having a designated area for backpacks, shoes, a go to place for permission slips (we have fridge magnet clips). These tiny steps can save SO much time, a little less “Where is my….” in the morning.
  • Gradual bedtimes: Start to push up bedtime just a little earlier each night a week or two before school starts. This was definitely easier when our kids were younger. We still have a time when our older kids need to be in their rooms to unwind. We have a no phone/tech in the bedroom rule, so they don’t go down the social media rabbit holes late into the night!

3. Try To Make It Fun—Fall Vibes, Pumpkin Snacks.

  • Change “What’s for Breakfast?” to “what’s for pumpkin breakfast?” Whether it’s hearty pumpkin muffins or warm apples, seasonal foods make your breakfast routine feel like a celebration.
  • Try a Summers Last Hurrah Dinner”: Make a summer fav meal for the night before school starts; burgers or tacos. Make it a fun night for those anxious kiddos.
  • We started a Chili on the first day of school tradition years ago and we all look forward to it. Nothing like comfort food on a 1st day. It’s even a win for me as we make it in the crockpot, easy don’t need to worry about what’s for dinner at 5pm night.

4. Fall Traditions That Feel Like Hugs

  • Day One, Game On Breakfast! Make something yummy for everyone for the first day of school, may family loved pumpkin bread and cinnamon rolls, they even get excited about a box of the not so healthy breakfast cereals!! A little fun in the morning before heading to those new classes/teachers.
  • After-school ice cream/treat: Little treats help launch the school year with cheer instead of whining. The first day can feel overwhelming and small treat can be something to look forward to, a little ice-cream or smoothie can hit the spot.
  • First Day of School Sign: This a tradition we have done since my kids were in pre-k. Yes, as a middle schooler and high schooler they give me some push back. I still sneak those pictures in before they leave on the first day. We do last day pictures too, I think they even like to see the growth difference in one school year.

Fall isn’t just for apples and sweaters.
It’s for parents, too. A quiet return to rhythm. Back-to-school, brisk air, warm mugs.
A moment to reset—one crisp morning at a time.

  4. This post is so perfectly timed and captures exactly how I feel about fall! I love how you’ve balanced the bittersweetness of summer ending with the genuine excitement of cozy fall routines. Your “you’ve got this” energy is exactly what parents need right now.
The evening prep tips are gold – especially the designated drop zones! I can’t tell you how many mornings we’ve spent frantically searching for missing shoes or permission slips. And I’m totally stealing your “chili on the first day” tradition – what a perfect comfort food way to end that milestone day!
I laughed out loud at your kids giving you pushback on the first day photos but you sneaking them in anyway. Some traditions are just too important to skip, even when they’re “too cool” for it. They’ll thank you for those photos someday!
Your writing style is so warm and encouraging. Thanks for making the back-to-school transition feel less overwhelming and more like something to actually look forward to! 🍂📚
